'Charles Mayes C.E. (1827-1899) worked as an architect, a surveyor and civil engineer in SA, Victoria and NSW from 1850-1884. His career, at the interface of these professions with estimating and contracting, was dominated at times by his skill in preparing estimates as a 'quantities surveyor'. In Victoria, in 1853, Mayes was the first to advertise these skills as a distinct branch of the architectural and surveying professions in the colonies. His publication of the The Victorian contractors and builders price-book in 1849, in Melbourne, was a notable, colonial first.' Source; Libraries australia.
