  • Epigraph: 'There was in the Church of St. Stephen, in this city, a fine example of the old Italian school, in a picture of the ever Blessed Virgin. The hands were raised in prayer, but tears seemed trembling in the eyes, which were downcast as if in grief. The features (though not perfectly beautiful) wore an expression of pity and devotion - inexpressibly touching.' - The Wanderer in Italy
