Notes

  • Epigraph: Thousands emigrated (from Norway) to England. Earl Istwold and other nobles, in obedience to the command of the priests of Odin, cut down the pine pillars which supported their castle halls, set them drifting on the sea, and followed in the tracks until they reached the shores of Iceland. In this inhospitable region the exiles founded a colony, poreferring to retain their independence. - Romance of Northern Europe.
