The editor of My Note Book reflects on the volume and quality of poetry submitted for his consideration. Among 'things equally bad' he resolves to publish the first poem he opens in the day's mail. That poem is 'On Fate'.
The editor of My Note Book publishes a letter he received from a local poet. The poet pronounces his talent and literary genius, and offers his poetry to the editor for publication. The editor, perhaps 'tongue in cheek' declares: 'The appearance of the first contribution from this distinguished author will be specially announced'.
