Notes

  • Author's note: 'Part 3, "The Common Trench", is mostly about World War One. Lines are lifted from poems by men and women in uniform or not. It includes lines by pacifist poets such as John Le Gay Brereton. My publisher is particularly fond of the reference to potatoes that comes straight after the line about "diggers" (the latter lifted from a poem about gold digging - origin of the military use of "Digger"?). I included it because potatoes are just the tonic for roasting in the trenches. (Source: Editorial p. 8)
