  • The poem was included in correspondence to Stow's London publisher and is previously unpublished. It is quoted in full in Andrew Taylor's article '"Bitter Heritage" or New Birth? Two Novels by Randolph Stow'. Taylor writes: 'I have quoted the poem in full, firstly, because it does not appear in any collection of Stow's poetry. Secondly, it aptly encapsulates the desolation of the novel's setting and its sense of being imprisoned in meaninglessness' (p. 154).
