Notes

  • Editor's note: In 1915 Henry Gullett was appointed official Australian correspondent with the British and French armies on the Western Front; later he became official Australian correspondent to the AIF in the Middle East. Directly after the war, Gillett was briefly the first director of the new Australian War Memorial, before collaborating with Charles Bean on the Official History, and entering federal politics. A member of Robert Menzies' War Cabinet, he was killed in the Canberra air disaster of 13 August 1940. Here, in Gullett's own volume of the Official History, he celebrates the crusading spirit of the Light Horsemen in the Holy Land.

From the Sudan in 1885 to Afghanistan in 2001, the connection of war to travel is illustrated by writers and reveals how the experience of war has both broadened and refined (and sometimes distorted) Australian views of the world.'
