In Burma in 1990, Aung San Suu Kyi won an election, but the ruling military junta refused to acknowledge the result. Author Allan Baillie heard a story about a real incident of rebellion that occurred that year, an incident in which a thong was thrown at a military officer. 'Rebel!' is based on that story.

  • Author's note states: 'In 1990 Aung San Suu Kyi won a landslide election in Burma but the ruling military junta refused to give up their power. A friend, Dr Than Lwyn, told me of a remarkable incident in Rangoon in that year. I wrote and Di Wu illustrated the picture book Rebel! to tell that story. This version is more accurate.'
