Notes

  • Editor's note: Allen Cameron grew up on his parents' station in the Glen Innes district of northern New South Wales. He enlisted for the Boer War at the end of 1899 and was wounded in action six months later. Sent to England to convalesce, he elected to rejoin his regiment in Africa rather than returning to Australia. Nevertheless he was home by 1901, and resumed his work as a farmer. Almost a full century later, Cameron's letters appeared in a compilation of Boer War vignettes compiled by A. W. Cameron (no relation).

From the Sudan in 1885 to Afghanistan in 2001, the connection of war to travel is illustrated by writers and reveals how the experience of war has both broadened and refined (and sometimes distorted) Australian views of the world.'
