The Global Mail is a philanthropically funded, not-for-profit news and features website. The 'About' page on the website states: 'With staff correspondents based in Europe, Asia, the Middle East, the United States and Latin America and an eclectic group of journalists in Australia, we explore the corridors of government and business, academic institutions, urban communities and country towns. We bring you stories about science, sport, art, culture, religion and the human spirit— plus everything in between. And we'd hardly be Australian if we forgot a healthy dose of satire and humour, would we?'

The Global Mail's sole founding philanthropist is Graeme Wood, co-founder of Wotif.com. In 2008, Wood was named Queenslander of the Year, the state's highest citizenship honour, and in 2012 he was made a Member of the Order of Australia Australia.
