Dr Sudharkar Rao is a successful and wealthy specialist in leprosy. After 25 years of working as a physician, he has returned to Darjeeling, India, where he was first assigned to the Leprosy Mission. He is brought a patient beyond help or recognition.

Unknown to him, the patient is Jyotafna, a woman who had been his lover for the five years he worked for the Leprosy Mission in Darjeeling. He realises this fact that night and races back from a Rao family party, just in time for Jyotafna to pass away.
