This poem, by the English scholar and poet Laurence Binyon, was initially published in the London Times in September 1914, in the days following the First Battle of the Marne. The fourth stanza appeared in the Times as follows:
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old.
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.
This stanza has subsequently become known as the 'Ode of Remembrance'. In Australia the recital of the 'Ode' forms an integral part of Remembrance Day and Anzac Day services. A recording of the 'Ode' is also broadcast in R.S.L. clubs across Australia each evening.
