Notes

  • The Empire reproduces a column from the Melbourne newspaper, the Collingwood Advertiser, that includes the poem 'Excelsior'. This column states that the poem came via a spiritualist in country Victoria, through his sister-in-law who acted as a medium and 'author' of the poem. However, the published poem appeared in a Philadelphia journal, the Guardian, in 1866 under the title 'Progress' and is the work of US poet William Cullen Bryant (1794-1878).
