Notes

  • At the head of the poem in the Empire: 'The following stanzas were written "by desire" for the special use of English schoolboys of the Jewish religion, and were first recited in public at the Stepney Jewish schools on the 28th June [1868] by Master Alfred Salmon, to whom and to whose schoolfellows it was inscribed. The verses, with a slight adaptation, were also recited by Master Davis, at the annual examination of the Jewish Sabbath schools, Sydney, in the Masonic Hall on Sunday last [13 September]'.
  • The alteration for colonial purposes is, presumably, the line at the beginning of stanza IV: 'We Austral boys of Jewish birth'.
