  • Author's note: This poem was inspired by my maternal grandmother, a very talented and high-spirited woman. Like many middle-class Hindu women, my grandmother had a prayer room of her own into which she disappeared for an hour twice a day. One day she confessed it wasn't just religion that inspired her to do this.
