Notes

  • This poem appears to have been first published in the Queensland Times in May 1866, with the author's name indicated as 'Circuitt Hebden' (which was how it was reproduced in the Empire shortly afterwards). This same poem, containing several minor textual alterations and two additional verses, was subsequently published in the Sydney Morning Herald in February 1867, under the title 'Autumn Long Ago'. Here the author's name and address were indicated as 'Satterley Willcocks. Islington Cottage, Springhill, Brisbane.' At this point it is unclear who actually wrote this poem, whether Hebden wrote the initial shorter version which was later added to by Willcocks (her husband), or whether it might perhaps have been jointly written by Hebden and Willcocks.
