'Recollections of a young boy growing up in a Queensland bush community during the most turbulent time in Australia's history. The stories are from a world that is almost unrecognisable to the one we live in today, about a community that no longer exists. My immediate family want to remember "Grandad's stories", and I hope the wider audience will enjoy either renewing their acquaintance with the world of their childhood, or learning about the world of parents and grandparents.'   • Dedication: This book is dedicated to my mother, Melva Smith.

    Melva's value system came from her parents particularly her mother's side. Her maternal grandparents were both born in Germany and came to Australia when they were children. Melva inherited their approach to life, specifically their work ethic, family values and duty.

    In dedicating this book to her, I put on record my appreciation of the efforts she made on my behalf. Against the backdrop of the Second World War, she used ingenuity, hard work and a
    'can-do' attitude to give me one of my most precious gifts - a happy childhood.
