'This essay examines the treatment of pseudoscience in the novel "Benang: From the Heart" by Australian novelist Kim Scott. The novel depicts colonial oppression of the Indigenous population through reliance on eugenics. Pseudoscientific taxonomic terms of race and identity, such as full-blood, half-caste, quadroon and octoroon are shown as being used to determine where people live and whom they marry. Terms of animal husbandry are noted. Ethical problems are discussed.' (Publisher's abstract)
