Author's note: Written as a tribute of sincere respect to the memory of the late John Kennedy Hume, Esq., of Collingwood, county King who lost his life while intrepidly attempting to aid a neighbour whose dwelling was attacked by the notorious Whitton and his sanguinary associates, in December, 1840.

According to the Victorian Heritage Database and the Upper Lachlan Shire Community Heritage Study, John Kenndy Hume was shot by the bushranger Thomas Whitton at Gunning, New South Wales, 20 January 1840.
