AbstractHistoryArchive Description

The first general meeting of the School of Arts subscribers was held last Monday. A nine-member committee has been elected, with Mr Chester as president and the Honorable G. W. Griffith as patron. Mr Wimble offered the use of a building in Lake Street for the committee to use until the School of Arts is erected. The offer was accepted.

A detailed report setting out the various proposers' arguments in favour of establishing a School of Arts in Cairns. The mayor declared the proposal showed the people of Cairns were not totally absorbed in acquiring wealth, but were prepared to devote some time to 'higher and more elevating pursuits'. Having a place to study and read was essential to keeping up with the world and remaining informed about the thoughts and writings of the great men of the day.

The proposal was carried and £111.6s.6d was subscribed.
