Notes

  • Contains a brief reference to a recent publication by English playwright, Noel Coward (1899-1973): 'Those who admire Noel Coward's work, and they are legion, will find a well-distilled essence of his ideas and manner in cameo by obtaining his book "Collected Sketches and Lyrics," [1931] published by Hutchinson.' Quoting two lines from 'The English Lido', the journalist notes Coward's 'ironic touch' describing 'the typical English seaside resort. What sad, hideous places they are! Those who know not Bondi, Manly, Southport, Portsea, Durban or Capetown, know not what a plage may be.' (content appears in topical column, 'This, That and Them', by London correspondent T. H. Cochran)
  • Includes 'Praise for Australia' (by C. B.), a brief section which references recent travel writing by overseas visitors to Australia, The Fifth Continent [1931] by E. O. Hoppé, and although not mentioned by title, Going Further (1931), the book that resulted from Geoffrey Malins travelling round the world by motorcycle. (content appears in topical monthly column, 'Contributed Comments (and Complaints)')
