Notes

  • New Year Number
  • Includes a brief commentary critiquing the censorship of books, art prints and film in Australia: 'The Customs people are at it again. A fresh batch of books has met their disapproval and will be forbidden entrance to a country whose daily breakfast-table is spiced with photographs of gangsters and their mistresses, where any dirty periodical can be easily obtained and where pornography, provided it is produced by a local industry, has a remarkably free run...It is useless to repeat the everlasting complaint of the comparatively intelligent person that he is tired of having his literature chosen for him by uneducated government officials. That gets us nowhere. Only ridicule can prick the hide of the bureaucrat.' (content appears in the monthly column, 'The Bibful', by E. J. Francis)
