Notes

  • Poem dated 24th October 1842.
  • This poem also appears in Ledlie's Miscellany and Journal for the North West published by John Parks Ledlie in Agra, India, July 1852. In this source the poem is entitled 'Evening Sighs' and written by' L'. With the lack of other evidence and the composition date of the poem, 24 October 1842, and its subsequent publishing in the Australasian Chronicle five days later, it is assumed the poem is 'local' and was first published in the Chronicle. The masthead of the Chronicle advertises the newspaper's circulation to India so L. (Ledlie?) may have picked up the poem from the Chronicle and republished it under a different title ten years later.
