Notes

  • Includes a book review by Lionel Lindsay (q.v.) for a work that is outside the scope of AustLit: G. C. Henderson Fiji and the Fijians, 1835-1856 (Sydney, NSW: Angus and Robertson, 1931).
  • Contains 'A New Idea in Libraries', an advertisement style section of prose that reports: 'Have you seen Swains' new book Rental Section? It is a new form of library from which you can obtain the best of the latest novels and general literature at a rental of only 10% per week. A special feature is that the attractive picture jackets are kept on the books, and this greatly facilitates the selection of your volumes...All the popular reprint novels are available at only 3d. per week.' The announcement concludes by listing some of the 'outstanding books' that are available.
  • Includes 'A Great Novelist' (by C. L. J.), an obituary for British writer and critic, Arnold Bennett (1867-1931). The obituary concludes with the following statement: 'This man who, as a creative artist and recorder of his time, has no peer and stands as a figure of his age contemporaneous with Galsworthy, Wells, and Shaw, passed from us at the age of 68 almost without comment by the Australian Press.'
Note: The October 1931 issue of The Home contains 'Extract from "The Times"' which reports that the 'personal library' of the late Mr Arnold Bennett had been sold at Sotheby's. (content appears in the column, 'Contributed Comments')
