Notes

  • This poem is in effect a shorter version of the poem 'The Fate of the Explorers, Burke and Wills', which was later published in the 1862 broadsheet A Tribute to the Memory of Burke and Wills. This 1861 Empire poem commences at line 17 of the 1862 broadsheet poem, and also omits the second last verse, comprising 8 lines. Given the 1861 Empire poem was published before the 1862 broadsheet poem, it is considered to be a separate work rather than an extract.
