Peggy Radford is left almost destitute after her father's bankruptcy and suicide. She moves into a boarding house where Jimmy Denison also lives. Learning she suffers from insomnia, Denison drives her around all night in his firm's car, which allows her to get some sleep. The narrator, Denison' boss, is attracted to her great beauty. He sends Denison to Adelaide and attempts to win Peggy's favour by securing her an acting position. However, his plans are foiled in a way he never expected.
