Notes

  • The statue of Captain Cook in Sydney's Hyde Park was unveiled in February 1879. The erection of the statue was largely due to efforts of New South Wales M.L.A. Robert Burdett Smith (1837-1895), who was honorary secretary of the Cook Statue Committee. At the time this poem was written, Smith was the Member for Hastings, which included the township of Camden Haven, where Kendall then lived. Smith became a frequent target of Kendall's satire, and presumably he was in Kendall's sights here as well.
