Theatre Royal : A New Way to Pay Old Debts, single work review
— Review of A New Way to Pay Old Debts 1859 single work musical theatre ;
Mr Montgomery showed his versatility as the villainous Sir Giles Overreach in Massinger's play, 'A New Way to Pay Old Debts'. His previous roles were free from 'feats of thundering exclamations or contortions of demeanour', but as Sir Giles he is portraying a character who embodies baseness. Such a role, the reviewer asserts, stretches an actor's skill. While generally commendable, the reviewer considers some of the scenes were overwrought and displayed an 'excess of passion' and therefore were less effective than his previous roles. However, the final scene, portraying the death of Sir Giles, was depicted in an artistic and frightful manner.
