AbstractHistoryArchive Description

'This is the first biography of Charles Marson, one of the early Christian Socialists. Born in 1859, he was ahead of his time in criticising his Church and Society for lack of social compassion. He was an influential journalist and author, collaborating with Edith Nesbit and Jerome K Jerome among others. In Somerset he partnered Cecil Sharp in the retrieval of English folk songs. All his life, he was a funny, articulate and inspiring figure.' (Publisher's blurb)

Notes

  • Dedication:

For my wife Lesley and children Amy and Thomas,
    who have been so patient.

And in memory of my father Canon Tom Sutcliffe,
who overcame sixty years of deafness and taught me
    the secrets of communication.

  • Author's note:

Jesus said to Peter: 'And I will give unto thee
the keys of the kingdom of heaven' (Matthew 16:19).
Christian Socialists like Charles often spoke of a
    new kingdom on earth.

The folk song 'The Keys of Heaven' was collected
by Charles Marson and Cecil Sharp from Mrs
Emma Welsh of Isle Brewers on September 6th
1904. Another version was collected from my
relative Charles Neville in East Coker in 1908.
