"Heustis was an American butcher in his thirties who was given the rank of Captain in the Canadian patriot forces in 1838. More than half of his Narrative is a justification and history of the rebellions in Upper and Lower Canada in the 1830s, and an account of his own involvement, which led to his arrest, trial, conviction and transportation to Van Diemen's Land in 1839. In company with his fellow rebels, Heustis worked initially in quarries and road gangs in the Hobart area, then moved to Lovely Banks and Green Pond stations, and to Bridgewater" (Walsh and Hooton 79).
