Notes

  • This poem was one of the 'addresses' composed for the opening of the Royal City Theatre, Sydney in 1843 and delivered on that occasion. Although not winning the prize for the best address, this poem was considered, by the editor of the New South Wales Magazine, or, Journal of General Politics, Literature, Science and the Arts, the best 'both in poetry and composition, and possessing considerable dramatic effect and fire'.

For further editorial comment on the theatre opening, see 'On the Theatrical Addresses for the Royal City Theatre'.
