Notes

  • Author's note: A Letter from The Author...Dear Sirs, During the course of the war just concluded I contributed to the Sunday Graphic of London this series of war poems which they published from week to week. I have leave from that paper to reproduce them in book form, and from the Scotsman and the Field to include two pieces which appeared in their columns....I still receive a number of letters from Australia which keep reminding me that my name is not forgotten over there and I feel that Australia is the place for me to launch this last work of mine...Poetry seems to be finding its feet (apt phrase!) in Australia, but it is a different kind of stuff to that which Lawson, Banjo and I used to contribute to the Bulletin in the nineties. It is probably something much more valuable-I don't know. Like a lot that is done over here it seems to have little sense in it and no music, and is too often just rather indifferent prose cut into short lines.... Will H. Ogilvie, 4 September 1945.
