Surveying some of the most popular fantasy writers of the past ten years against the background of classic fantasy literature for children, this article asks: 'Why are such stories so enormously popular? And more interestingly, why are they so profoundly important? Why should we not only be allowing our children to include fantasy in their reading diet, but actually encouraging it?' (p. 10).
