Notes

  • A poem on Chinese immigration, in part inspired by New South Wales M.L.A. Robert Thomas Jamison (1829-1878), who introduced a bill proposing to levy a poll tax of ten pounds on male Chinese immigrants and workers not accompanied by a wife.
  • Note that the Courier (Hobart) attributes this poem to the 'Sydney Herald'. However the original source was probably the Empire, where it appeared with the author's brief covering letter.
