Notes

  • Editor's note: 'Here is a real, old-fashioned story, told in a real old-fashioned way. How arch were the naughty ladies of the naughty nineties! And how arch were the writers! Their use of inverted commas is ineffably humorous; their style, replete with phrases that to-day would be called pompous, is a study for literary historians. The writer of this story is a survivor of the naughty nineties.'
