  • First epigraph: Odes. Book 3, Ode 1. -'Odi profanum vulgus, et arceo.' - Made to order for the Honorable the Solicitor-General, but rejected as not being sufficiently elegant.
  • Second epigraph: Argument - The Government prefer mediocrity and an easy life to any prospect of wealth and honour for the colony.
