  • Author's note: 'Suggested by the scene witnessed in St Mary's Cathedral, Sunday, Sept 1st, 1850.'
  • News item on p.5 of The Freeman's Journal (5 Sept. 1850): 'On Sunday the congregation of St. Mary's Cathedral had the pleasure of witnessing the "first communion" of upwards of three hundred young people. This was at the eight o'clock mass. Subsequently at the eleven o'clock mass, four hundred and nine persons received the sacrament of confirmation. Of these four hundred and nine, about one hundred and fifty were converts, sixty of these latter being adults'.
