Notes

  • The poem is accompanied in its publication in Hontanar by a lengthy note from the editor, Michael Gamarra, explaining that the author had submitted the poem to the magazine Version just as that magazine ceased publication. Gamarra wrote an encouraging letter to the author, who some time later responded, saying she had persevered with her writing and had her work published in anthologies from Queensland. Engelgard-Olejnik wrote to Gamarra: 'You were quite impressed with my poem 'Rock Bottom' and I found your comments to be most encouraging. In fact, your kind words did inspire me to write more poetry' (p. 7)
