AbstractHistoryArchive Description

Highlights among the Shadows is the autobiography and family history of Owen Clement, who was born in Kharagpur, Bengal and has lived in England, Canada, Papua New Guinea and Australia. 'Having held three citizenships, British-Indian, Canadian and Australian, having lived on three separate continents and being part of mixed heritage has played a major part in my trying to understand this world and all its people,' the author writes (247).

Owen Clement is the father of Rod Clement, children's author and illustrator.

Notes

  • Epigraph: 'Heredity' by Thomas Hardy
    I am the family face;
    Flesh perishes, I live on,
    Projecting trait and trace
    Through time to times anon,
    And leaping from place to place
    Over oblivion.
    The years-heired feature that can
    In curve and voice and eye
    Despise the human span
    Of durance - that is I;
    The eternal thing in man,
    That heeds no call to die.
