This is a far more personal work than Halloran's other tribute poem to Macdonald which appeared in the Sydney Morning Herald on 14 February, 1852, under the title 'Bury the Bard'. Significantly, in this Empire poem, Halloran also makes oblique references to three of Macdonald's poems: 'On a Movement of Beethoven's' (1838); Sonnet to Weber (1827); and 'Come to the Lake of Swans', which appeared in the Colonist in May 1835 with the author's name indicated as 'Ione'. Halloran's reference to this third poem is particularly important as it provides further confirmation that Macdonald was the poet 'Ione'.
