Taylor and Bryant came separately to Ballagan station to man the artesian bore pumps. Taylor falls when helping a yearling out of the trough and while he is down Bryant murders him with an axe. Ashton the ration truck driver becomes suspicious and notifies the station manager who orders an investigation. Bryant sticks to his story that Taylor left because he had a toothache and although the Aboriginal tracker cannot find his tracks leaving the place he also cannot find any evidence of murder. Then the cattle break the trough and the running water shows clearly where a grave had been dug.
