Epigraph: I spent a week at work in a house by the ocean, and at the end of the week M telephoned. 'We've lost the baby,' she said, and she cried. And I cried later, too, driving home to her. Some time in the middle of those days of fire, our child had simply stopped; that small god had gone. For two weeks after that, it rained all over the plateau. Even late in February, the sky still had nothing to say but cloud and falling water.
