'The founder of the Sisters of Saint Joseph of the Sacred Heart, Mary MacKillop was a pioneer, and established orphanages, convents, and even started the first free Catholic school in an old stable in South Australia. MacKillop remembers these as she travels to Rome and has an audience with the Pope in 1872.
Of course, in 19th century Australia, and even within the Catholic church, MacKillop was challenging the establishment, roles and ideals, and that wasn't always appreciated; she was even excommunicated by the Bishop of Adelaide.' Source: /www.theage.com.au (Sighted 30/06/2010).
