Notes

  • Author's note: After the wreck of the Batavia in 1629 off the Abrolhos Islands, the fleet's commander, Francisco Pelsaert, left for Java in a small boat. Meanwhile the under-merchant, Jeronimus Cornelius, gained control of the islands and ordered the massacre of 125 people. Lucretia Jansz, who had already suffered a great indignity while on board ship, was forced to become Cornelius' concubine.
