Notes

  • Author's note: The people of Hai Thon, a small fishing hamlet on the coast of Thanh Hoa Province, suffered greatly during the war when their boats and nets were often seized at sea or destroyed from the air. In 1952 the villages repulsed an attempt by the French to land troops at Hai Thon and Sam Son as a means of gaining a fresh foot-hold on that part of the country. Although many of their houses were destroyed in the bombing, the women in the local guerrilla forces played their part in helping to drive the French landing party back into the sea. Today Hai Thon is a flourishing fishing hamlet again.
