Uncle Harry had poliomyelitis that left him unable to walk without crutches. After quitting drink, he moved to a small West Australian town, where he became the cook and helper for a family with two children, Dorothy and Geoffrey, the latter being the author.
With Uncle Harry's encouragement, Geoffrey won third place for his singing at his first and last concert.
