Note: Author note: 'The first time I heard, in a mental hospital in Canada, details of the electrical treatment, I at once decided to write a radio play on the treatment. The treatment, as I know now, must be discounted as a failure. But I can't scrap the play, because it does express the dignity and charity of the old-style genuine mental doctor' (p.250).
