Dedication: To His Excellency
Sir Henry Barkly R.C.R.
Governor-in-Chief of the Colony of Victoria, Etc.,Etc.,
These Poems
(By Kind Permission)
Are Most Respectfully Inscribed,
By His Excellency's Most Obedient Servant,
The Author.
DEDICATORY
Accept, Sir, these few verses: would they were
More worthy to present to you; but ofttimes
My pen hath served a poor interpreter,
And feelings cannot always soar in rhymes.
Yet if there should be in these simple themes
Aught that expresses though but one bright truth,
'Twill not be vainly I indulged the dreams
And wayward fancies of a happy youth.
And in this hope I dedicate whate're
Within them may be worthy to remain
Unto yourself, and with no other prayer-
Same that no heart may read thereof in vain.
