Editor's note: Gregan McMahon - one of the most intelligent, industrious, and capable citizens of Australia - an actor of talent, and a skilful stage-producer of other people's talents - was born in Sydney more than forty years ago to become the stoutest bulwark of our literary theatre. Educated at Sydney Grammar School, Riverview College, and Sydney University - where he took a BA degree - he studied law and listened to Robert Brough encouraging him to make his career in the theatre. Followed a tour in India and China, learning his job, and long years labouring and touring with the managements of Robert Brough, W. F. Hawtrey, Meynell and Gunn, Brough-Flemming, and J. C. Williamson. In 1911 he founded the Melbourne Repertory Theatre; in 1917 he joined J. & N. Tait to exchange guarantees with the Sydney Repertory Theatre Society, of which - in addition to his other professional work - he remains director.
