AbstractHistoryArchive Description

This is a report on research commissioned by the Department of Immigration and Ethnic Affairs and carried out in two stages in 1981 and 1982. The introduction quotes the Brief from the Department setting out the initial research objectives: 'The objective of the proposed pilot study is to identify the role that the ethnic press play in communicating with and reflecting the interests of individual ethnic communities, and its capacity to adapt to cultural, economic and other changes which significantly influence its readership and its own commercial viability' (p. 2).

Notes

  • The report found that among the six Arabic language newspapers studied 'all included at least some literary content, although the proportions of space allocated to literature varied fairly widely between papers. [...] An-Nahar and Sada Loubnan were the two papers with the largest proportion of space given to literary content' (p. 112).
  • With regard to literary coverage in Greek-language newspapers, the report found that 'such content was found in all Greek papers, but that the space allocated to literary content varied considerably between papers. The paper with the largest proportion of the total area allocated to this type of content was To Ethniko Vema (9%) while the relevant proportions for the remaining papers were much less -- i.e. 4% in O Kosmos, 3% in Nea Patrida (1981 and 1982), 3% in Panellinios Kirikas and only slightly above 1% in Neos Kosmos' (p. 182).
